The Sports Research & Informatics Unit started its activity in July 1992 as a center serving scientific and applied research in fields related to physical education and sport. The goal of the unit was to raise the standard of physical education and sport through the use of physical and human resources available. This noble goal was translated into more specific objectives including:

An outstanding landmark in the development of the Sports Research and Informatics Unit was the recognition by the UNESCO of the Unit as a major center for granting the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) accredited by EDCL in January 2006 and holding the exams leading to the granting of the international license. One of the unit’s halls was already provided for holding the tests. This simply means that the Unit is the first center for in Alexandria University granting the international license. 1300 tests have been held by the unit so far.
