The Sports Research & Informatics Unit in the Service of the Faculty Community and the Surrounding Area
  • An outstanding landmark in the development of the Sports Research and Informatics Unit was the recognition by the UNESCO of the Unit as a major center for granting the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) accredited by EDCL in January 2006 and holding the exams leading to the granting of the international license. One of the unit’s halls was already provided for holding the tests. This simply means that the Unit is the first center for in Alexandria University granting the international license. 1300 tests have been held by the unit so far.
  • The Ministry of Communications also recognized the unit as a training center within the framework of the ministry's program of skill development, part of the National Project for the Super user and Normal User of the Computer. 8 courses were held so far and 870 students have already completed training.
  • The unit is also recognized as a center of the Ministry of Higher Education for the development of the National Projects to train faculty staff members and researchers. 64 trainees have so far been graduated.
  • 31 staff members of institutes of technology got their ICDL through the unit.
  • The Higher Institute of Public Health and the Unit concluded an agreement to train the institute staff members on computer operating within the framework of the institute infra-structure project.
  • An arrangement was made with the Egyptian Chamber of Commerce to create 1500 training opportunities to grant trainees a Microsoft accredited certificates on how to use the internet and the windows programme
  • In cooperation within the Faculty's Quality Assurance Unit, the Faculty administrative staff received training on the use of computers, as part of the faculty's plan to develop computer skills. 62 administrative staff members received the training.
  • The Examination Control Room database has been completed for the four years of the undergraduate stage, which will help students learn the examination results more easily and in short notice.
  • The physical abilities test results database has been completed and students willing to join the faculty can daily learn the result online.
  • Work is underway to develop the database for students, faculty staff members and faculty administrative personnel.
  • The unit continued providing technical support for postgraduate students to solve scientific problems using the computer, including statistic treatment, typing and printing theses, organizing training courses, providing measurement tools, etc.
  • In cooperation with the ICTP project the unit provides trainers for 11 faculties in Alexandria.
  • Trainees in the ICTP project include 15 faculty staff members, 16 associate staff members, 25 employees. The second phase of the project covers 16 faculty staff members, 17 associate staff members, 17 employees.
  • In cooperation with MicroSoft and the Supreme Council of Universities, the unit provide lecturers for the Digital Literacy Project
  • The unit concluded an agreement with the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University on teaching and holding examinations for the faculty students to obtain the ICDL. 35 students faculty staff members have graduated so far.
  • The unit concluded an agreement with the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University on teaching and holding examinations for the faculty students to obtain the ICDL for the French department students.
  • The unit concluded an agreement with the Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University on teaching and holding examinations for the faculty students to obtain the ICDL for Malaysian students.
  • Study subjects are made available, through the unit , on the faculty website, thus introducing the e-learning concept into the faculty and upgrading the students standards and giving them more chance to act and re-act in the learning process.
  • An agreement was made with Orascom Company to give a 3-month training to 3 employees working in the unit so that they can start developing the databases required to serve the educational, learning and administrative processes in the faculty.
  • An agreement was made with Orascom Company to grant 21 demonstrators and assistant lecturers free of charge courses to obtain Oracle site development certificates.
  • An agreement was signed with UC MAS to teach the international programme in the unit. The programme aims at offering training courses to children that will help develop their mental abilities, upgrading the standard of their thinking in general

The Internet and the Local Community

Launching the website of the Faculty of Sport Education for Men, Alexandria University, or www.sea.edu.eg , on the internet was a cultural turning point in the history of the faculty. It was a consecration of a new era of sport education in Egypt. The site was no doubt a giant step towards the society of information and communication technology, the following achievements give us in insight to what happened:

  • The establishment of 5 large halls equipped with 75 computers to serve the faculty community and the surrounding local community.
  • The creation, management and updating of the faculty site on the internet.
  • The creation, management and updating of the Sport Research & Informatics Unit site on the internet.
  • The creation, management and updating of the Quality Assurance Unit site on the internet.
  • The creation, management and updating of the Faculty administrative personnel site on the internet.
  • Allocating personal pages for the faculty staff members on the faculty site.
  • Providing access to the faculty site for every student through a personal number by which a student can access his record in the Student Affairs Section and learn the results of his examinations.
  • Opening the Internet Cyber to the public, thus serving .

Information Technology

A major achievement of the Sport Research & Informatics Unit was the agreement signed with Dart-fish Middle East recognizing the Unit as a ‘Center of Excellence’ for Cross-Curricular integration of video analysis and digital technology within the faculty. In this respect, it is to be mentioned that Mr. Nil Melville, an expert on the subject participated in a workshop entitled “The Use of DartFish Technology in Sport”, hosted by the unit in February 2006.

For a better administrative organization, the finger print system was introduced, thus ensuring more control on the attendance of employees.

Students were given smart cards to use at the faculty electronic gates, thus ensuring more control on the attendance of students.

The unit continued its support to the promotion and dissemination of information technology by signing a contract with the Integrated Structure Building Project for Training Faculty Staff Members and Assisting Staff on information and communication technologies in higher education institutions. According to the contract, the unit will provide lecturers and trainers needed for the project.

Based on the faculty’s strong belief in the importance of cooperation and coordination between Arab scientific, academic and educational institutions to implement joint programmes and projects serving the Arab societies, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the Scientific Centre for School Sport Development in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, according to which it was agreed that:

  • The Centre will use the unit facilities and potentials.
  • The Unit will provide assistance to researchers enrolled with the Centre in the field of measurements.
  • The Unit will provide the Centre with experts and specialized staff who will carry out training and educational courses organized by the Centre.
  • Exchange of scientific publications, including theses, dissertations and scientific journals.
  • Mutual attendance of conferences, symposia and scientific events.
  • Formation of joint scientific panels to supervise and judge theses, dissertations and research papers.
  • Making use of the DartFish technology applications.

Language Courses

Within the framework of the faculty’s plans to improve the standard of language learning at the faculty, a special language section was established at the unit in 2006, teaching courses in English and French.
